President's message: last updated: January 31, 2012
Welcome to the home page for the East Kern Historical Museum Society. In the early 1980's, our museum was destroyed by fire. This site has memorialized the history of the Antelope Valley and specifically, the communities of California City, Boron, and Mojave, California.

INTRODUCTION:
The relatively short history of East Kern County, or specifically the Antelope Valley, is proceeded by a long and richly varied history for the region in general. The prehistoric record of Native American Occupation of the area may extend back 10,000 years or more.
California City had its origins in 1958 when real estate developer and sociology professor Nat Mendelsohn purchased 80,000 acres of Mojave Desert land with the aim of master-planning California's next great city. He designed a model city, which he hoped would one day rival Los Angeles, around a Central Park and beautiful waterfall, with a 26 acre artificial lake. California City was incorporated in 1965.
